Set in 14th Century Japan, Princess Mononoke is a beloved film that follows a young tribal warrior named Ashitaka, who stumbles into a bitter war in which a girl raised by wolves defends her forest home against the people of Iron Town, who have entered into conflict with the spirits of nature by cutting down a forest to dig their mines. This epic masterpiece by director Hayao Miyazaki deals with themes of people’s relationship to nature, the consequences of taking too much from the land, and the challenge of living in balance with the ecosystems that sustain us.
