The Wallace Stegner Lectures feature writers, thinkers and activists who explore important issues related to land, nature and conservation. Our 2021 season, “The Path Forward,” features leaders who offer perspectives on how we as a community can address the myriad social and environmental issues we’re confronting today. This is the first time we’ve offered the Wallace Stegner Lectures in an online format, and we’re excited to lead you through an inspiring journey of communal learning. Proceeds fund POST’s work to protect open space on the Peninsula and in the South Bay for the benefit of all.

The late Ambassador Laurence W. “Bill” Lane, Jr. and his wife Jean sponsored the Wallace Stegner Lectures from their inception in 1993. Jean passed away in 2017, but had established the Bill and Jean Lane Endowment to provide for their annual lead sponsorship of this beloved series. POST applauds Jean and Bill, whose unwavering support, energy and dedication enable us to bring you the lecture series again this year and into the future.
Since 1993, POST has hosted the Wallace Stegner Lectures in tribute to Wallace Stegner (1909 – 1993), a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, environmental leader and longtime Peninsula resident. Stegner was an ardent conservationist and Stanford University English professor who worked to preserve the Peninsula land he captured in his writing.
A longtime friend of POST, Stegner helped launch the lectures and was slated to be our first host. Because he died before the series began, the lectures are named in his honor.
We are excited to present our annual Wallace Stegner Lectures in a format you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home, which allows us to bring you these inspiring and important talks affordably.
This year, we’re keeping things simple with just one ticket for the whole season: The $30 ticket gives you access to all four 2021 lectures. (In previous years, tickets to each lecture cost $40, totaling $120 for all three lectures.) Please note, our first lecture with Dolores Huerta & Luis Valdez will be free and fully accessible to the community. Lecture subscribers do not need to sign up separately for this event.
With the purchase of the $30, full-access ticket, you’ll receive a private viewing link that allows you to join us for each virtual lecture. You’ll also receive access to recordings of each event to watch at your convenience through April 30, 2021.
Ticket holders will receive advance emails from POST with full lecture access details and additional resources to help you prepare to fully enjoy and engage with each speaker.
